What are the CLEP Exams?

General information on CLEP Exams

What is a CLEP Exam?

The College-Level Examination Program, CLEP for short, are exams that are used to get college level credits by writing a single test. You can think of it as skipping right to the final exam in a college course and having your entire grade based on that test.

How The CLEP Exams Work

Essentially by taking CLEP exams you can skip classes that you feel you have a good understanding of. Many people enter college and find that the first year courses are similar to what they had learned in the last years of high school. By taking the CLEP exam of a given subject you will be credited as if you had taken the entire course.

Do All Colleges Accept CLEP Credits?

Unfortunately the answer is no. Almost 3000 colleges accept credits but there are others that do not. On top of this some colleges accept certain credits while not accepting others. The policy for colleges is usually written in their catalog but the best thing to do before writing any CLEP exams is to check with your professors or faculty. If you aren’t currently enrolled but want to know their policies before attending the school try contacting the secretary or first year advisor for the program you applied to. This can save you considerable headache if it turns out the credits will not be honored and this was part of your plan.

Can I Take all My First Year Courses By Testing?

This again is based on the college you will be attending. Some colleges allow an unlimited amount of credits and yes you can basically CLEP your way through most first year courses. Other colleges only accept certain credits or limit the amount of total courses that you can test your way out of.
